Gankutsuou Mini Review (anime)

gankutsuou.jpg

PG-16 for violence, sexuality, darkness, etc.; official series website

The Count of Monte Cristo, anime-style. Self-satirical in a way I don’t think it realizes, this anime shifts the focus to Albert, the zealous and stupid young male, and turns the Count into a mysterious blue-skinned vampire from space. This show is so blatantly anime it can grate on the nerves, but it’s still decent–and it would take a lot to screw up such a great story. The visuals of Gankutsuou are also unique and fascinating, but have been known to cause headaches. This show ended up gaining critical acclaim…but as far as Studio Gonzo classics-into-anime, I prefer the newer Romeo x Juliet.

Initial impression: Worth a try, and maybe a laugh and/or a groan. (Lianne)

No, I believe they (being the creators) knew how satirical they were being compared to the book, the story as a standalone anime was just presented very seriously. Apparently the cast referred to the Albert character as “Ahoberu” (Dumbass-bert) throughout recording. And, having read the book, some changes (all the main characters being at least vaguely homoerotic except the one character revealed to be gay in the end of the book; everyone being in love with the anime’s main character- which is common for anime, but in the book he just thought everyone loved him; the duel scene) were inside jokes or for shock value for people who’d read it already.

    Also: mecha.
